This British television documentary covers a lot of familiar ground in the life and times of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. But the old story is nonetheless compelling as told by numerous eyewitnesses to history. Organized chronologically, Through the Eyes of the World introduces a stream of bit players from Ali's Louisville childhood, his early training in the ring, further adventures at the Olympics, professional triumphs, prison, Africa, and not least his place in the hearts and imaginations of the American people. There are some oddball, but not uninteresting, choices for talking heads (Rod Steiger, Billy Connelly, Richard Harris). But nothing really detracts from the film's strong case for Ali's extraordinary evolution from magnificent clown to citizen of the world. --Tom Keogh
